Not All Captivity Is Physical - Reflections on Domestic Violence

One of the most common questions asked about domestic violence is, “Why didn’t they just leave?” This question often overlooks the complex dynamics that keep people trapped. Captivity is not always physical. It can be psychological, emotional, social, economic, and systemic. Understanding these dynamics can help us move from blame to understanding and recognise coercive control for what it is.
